01What Elementor is (and is not)

Elementor is a visual website builder that runs inside WordPress. Instead of writing HTML and CSS, you drag elements onto a live canvas and style them with panels, and the result looks exactly like your published page. WordPress still handles your pages, posts, users, media and plugins. Elementor replaces the editing and design layer.

Three things it is not:

  • Not a host. You still need WordPress hosting. Elementor also sells hosting, but it's optional.
  • Not a theme. It works on top of a theme. Most people pair it with Hello Elementor, a deliberately empty theme (lesson 02).
  • Not lock-in-free. Pages you design with Elementor need Elementor to render. Content you write in posts stays portable, but layouts don't.

02Free, Pro and One

Elementor comes in three layers. The free plugin from wordpress.org is a complete page builder on its own. Elementor Pro is a paid plugin that adds site-wide building tools. Elementor One bundles Pro with a monthly pool of credits for AI and hosted services.

LayerWhat you getGood for
FreeThe editor, Atomic Elements, Flexbox/Grid layout, Classes and Variables, and about 30 classic widgets (Heading, Image, Button, Icon Box, Tabs, Accordion, Testimonial, Google Maps…).Landing pages, simple brochure sites, learning.
ProTheme Builder, Form Builder, dynamic content, Loop Grid/Carousel, Popup Builder*, custom code & CSS*, WooCommerce builder*.Real client sites, blogs, shops.
OneEverything in Pro, plus monthly credits for AI, image optimization, accessibility fixes, cookie consent, email deliverability and a site-management dashboard.People who would otherwise buy those services as separate plugins.

* Not included in the cheapest Pro plan. See the next step.

03Which Pro plan to pick

Pro plans mostly differ by the number of sites, but the entry plan also leaves out several features. Here is the line-up as of autumn 2026:

PlanSitesWatch out for
Essential1No Popup Builder, no custom code/CSS, no WooCommerce builder. Custom fields in dynamic content and form submission storage are also excluded.
Advanced Solo1The full Pro feature set for a single site.
Advanced3The full Pro feature set.
Expert25Made for freelancers with several clients.
One / One Agency1 / unlimitedPro plus credits. Only worth it if you will use the AI or hosted services.

Annual plans have a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try Pro on a real project before committing. Compare the current plans and prices on elementor.com (affiliate link).

04Version 4 and the Atomic Editor

Elementor 4.0 shipped in spring 2026 and made the Atomic Editor the default for every new site. It's the biggest change since Elementor launched, and it's why the old version of this course had to go.

Classic (v3) widget

  • element wrapper
    • widget container
      • <h2> heading

Each widget has its own style controls. Only some properties can change per device.

Atomic (v4) element

  • <h2> heading

The same Style tab for every element. Every property can change per device. Styles are reusable through Classes.

Fig. 1 — Simplified markup: Atomic Elements render with a single wrapper, so pages are lighter.

What that means for you:

  • Atomic Elements sit at the top of the Elements panel: Div block, Flexbox, Grid, Heading, Paragraph, Button, Image, SVG and more.
  • Classes and Variables let you style once and reuse everywhere, much like real CSS (lesson 07).
  • Components are reusable blocks that stay in sync across pages (lesson 08).
  • Classic widgets still work. You can mix them with Atomic Elements on the same page.

05How this course works

Every lesson is a short list of steps with a quick quiz at the end. Diagrams show the parts of the editor that matter; they are not pixel-perfect screenshots. Labels in this style are the exact words you will see in Elementor.

  • Click Mark step as done as you go. Your progress is saved in this browser.
  • Lessons 01–08 work with free Elementor. Lessons 09–10 need Pro.
  • The course is written for Elementor 4.3. If a menu label has moved in a newer release, look for the same word nearby. The concepts stay the same.

06Common mistakes

  • Buying Essential, then needing popups. Check the feature list against your project before you buy, not after.
  • Following tutorials from before 2026 step by step. Sections and columns, and per-widget styling, are the old way. The ideas still apply, but the clicks don't.
  • Stacking page builders. Using Elementor alongside a second builder or a heavy multipurpose theme doubles the CSS and the confusion. Pick one.

✓Quick quiz

Three questions to check the essentials. Get them all right to complete the lesson.

1. You need a contact form, a custom header and an exit-intent popup on one site. Which plan is the cheapest fit?
2. What happens to your existing pages when an old site updates to Elementor 4?
3. Which feature lets you style once and reuse that style on many elements?
